Nuclear weapons in all Italy

Thomas Di Francesco and Manlio Dinucci on the manifest of 28/10/2010

"As long as there are nuclear weapons, NATO remains an alliance nuclearized ': this is the directive of Washington that the Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen is transmitting and its European allies have agreed to the meeting of defense ministers in Brussels on October 14 in preparation for the Summit of Heads of State and Government on 19-20 November in Lisbon. In other words, the U.S. will maintain a nuclear arsenal in Europe. Yet in the "historic" speech in Prague on April 5, 2009, President Barack Obama declared that the U.S. will step concrete steps towards a world without nuclear weapons, strengthening the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation Treaty which commits countries to eliminate nuclear and non-nuclear do not acquire them. Thus implied to be favorable to the removal of U.S. nuclear weapons from Europe. On this basis, five European members of NATO - Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway and the Netherlands - had declared their intention to raise the issue at a summit in Lisbon.

Modern hyper-penetrating

How is what actually emerges from the ratio of U.S. non-strategic nuclear weapons in Europe: Born in Fundamental debate, presented at the end of October by a committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO. Firstly, it confirms that you know exactly how many non-strategic nuclear weapons (with a range of less than 5500 km) that the U.S. maintain in four European NATO countries - Italy, Belgium, Germany, Holland - and in Turkey. According to a low estimate, quoted in the report, would be 150-200, including 70-90 in Italy (Aviano and Ghedi-Torre). According to other estimates, at least twice. Are B-61 bombs in several versions, whose power ranging from 45 to 170 kilotons (13 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb). Among these, probably, the B61-11, which can leach into the soil so as to create, with the nuclear explosion, a shock wave capable of destroying underground targets. All these bombs are kept in special hangars along with fighter jets F-15, F-16 and Tornado, ready for nuclear attack.

The report confirms that there are "bilateral nuclear agreements' secrets, according to which some of these weapons can be used by the armed forces of host countries that the U.S. once they have decided to use. But, please note in the report, the advocates of arms control argue that "NATO has a responsibility to end this practice of nuclear sharing," because it violates the Treaty on the Non-proliferation: it prohibits the states possessing nuclear weapons transfer them to others (Art. 1) and non-nuclear to receive from anyone (Art. 2).

The silence of the Italian Government

Among the option of maintaining the U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe as they are and to withdraw completely, there are proposals in between. The most reliable, according to the report, is that the U.S. Air Force's "nuclear weapons in less group geographical locations." According to most experts, "the most likely places for such relocation are the bases under U.S. control in Aviano, Italy, and Incirlik, Turkey." Significantly, the report notes, is that the meeting of foreign ministers of NATO in April 2010, the issue of U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe has been raised by Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, while Italy and Turkey have remained silent. This suggests that the Italian government has already secretly given his consent to the plan to remove U.S. nuclear weapons from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands to group them in Aviano, where even those would be transferred to Ghedi-Torre.

deployed to Aviano and the 31st Fighter Wing, consisting of two squadrons of F-16 fighter-bombers - 510th Fighter Squadron and 555th Fighter Squadron. Its mission is to "provide combat power from one end of the globe to meet the objectives of the United States and NATO." Nuclear power also, as shown by the emblem of the 510th Fighter Squadron in which, alongside the imperial eagle, there is the symbol of the atom with three lightning strike the earth.
